Work and Home: Do we have to choose?

On Saturday, my son started begging for roller blades.

No big deal, except he just got a skateboard a month ago. He’s getting pretty good. I actually can’t believe how fast he picked it up.

He also has a bike he LOVES to ride. And a scooter.

I tried to explain that he has enough things to take to the skate park…he did not agree. The neighbour down the street has roller blades. My boy cannot imagine his life without this!

So, if anyone has toddler size 9 roller blades for sale…

I know he doesn’t need them. But I sure understand the feeling!

A few months ago, I opened up my business to include coaching and training for parents, in addition to leaders in the workplace. Which means I have two areas of focus.

Which is fine…except when it means my marketing is scattered and I know sometimes people who follow me to learn about one thing get confused when I end up talking about the other.

All the professional advice is that I should choose one. “Niche down,” it’s called. Choosing a specialty so you can focus your offerings to people who want just that thing.

It makes sense.

And I love the simplicity of it.

I’ve tried to do it so many times, and I just can’t!

Imagine being a parent coach…and NEVER getting to do a strategic plan or help someone lead better meetings!

But, then, imagine being a business coach…and NEVER getting to help someone figure out how to respond to their child’s meltdown!

I love them both. Like rollerblades and a skateboard, I just can’t decide. So, for now, I’m doing two things.

And, every once in a while, I get to experience this beautiful synergy when the two areas of focus overlap and the fact that I can do both is exactly what someone needs.

Like the group of 150 preschool educators and administrators at my workshop last week, who needed to learn about emotional regulation, but also about how to shift curriculum to better meet the needs of their communities.

Or the 50 women, all professionals, who are gathering next month to learn about how to balance those roles and thrive.

Or any of my clients, managers and team leaders, who “just need to talk about my kids today because I can’t think about anything else!”

So, for now, I’m doing both.

And, since you’re with me, whatever you came to find, here’s what’s coming up:

The Leaders Circle

A brand new cohort of The Leaders Circle is starting May 7th!

This six-week course gives new leaders the foundational skills they need to step into their roles with confidence and excellence. This course is so much fun to host! And I love hearing from past participants about the difference it’s making in their teams!

Learn more about it right HERE.

Parenting Workshops

I’m hosting a bunch of my favourite workshops over the next few months, to help parents be ready for summer. I love all this content! It’s such a gift to learn about each family and watch parents get excited about improving their relationships with their kids.

Share THIS with parents in your life!

My guess is that you can relate to this experience. The desire for simplicity thwarted by the reality of competing priorities.

We all have important things to accomplish at work.

We all have people we care about at home.

And all of it requires presence, confidence, empathy, innovation, and leadership.

And all of it is better when we journey together.

That’s why Burning Point is about Coaching for Leaders, at Work and at Home.
